Up&Up English – language training

Want to improve your English language skills? Then you’re in the right place! With over a decade of experience, we know how to teach English. We learn best when we’re having fun, and that’s what our training sessions aim to be.

A made-to-measure learning experience

So, how can we help you? Well, that’s the first question we ask you, because all of our training courses are made-to-measure. We start by asking you a lot of questions, such as:

• What do you need to use your English for?
• How often to you use English?
• Which is more important to you – writing or speaking? Or both? In what ratio?
• Do you have to write a lot of emails/estimates/reports?
• Do you need to speak on the phone/face-to-face/negotiate?

We work on the basis of a personal intake conversation where we really get to understand your business. We want to know what you do on a day-to-day basis and what problems you come up against in relation to your language use. Are you confident in speaking English? Does it take too much time and effort to write short emails? Are you getting frustrated when speaking to clients because you just can’t find the right words?

We take the time during our intake procedure to really get to know your business, to understand what you do and how you do it, so that we can quickly get to the heart of what you need to learn. We don’t waste time teaching you stuff that you don’t need, we focus quickly and accurately on exactly what is useful for you.

One-to-one training sessions

Do you want to learn quickly, but in a personal session? Our one-to-one training sessions are designed exclusively for you. These sessions usually take the form of a two-and-a-half-hour lesson once a week in your own working environment. With a course of 12 lessons and a little bit of self-study to reinforce what you have learnt in the lessons, you will see a big improvement in your language level. Naturally, this is only our suggested starting point. If you want a longer course or a shorter lesson, or vice versa, just come and discuss your requirements with us. We’re always happy to help!

Group training sessions

Do you have a few employees who would like to improve their English? Group sessions are a fun way to improve the overall language level of your department or business. We work with small groups (max. 8 participants) in the same format as the one-to-one training sessions (2½ hour lesson once a week for 12 weeks). And the extra benefit of offering group training sessions to your staff is the team building effect. Learning together brings employees closer together. They get to know each other better and improve their language skills at the same time!

Specialist language training

Whether you are a horticulturalist or a lawyer, an engineer or an accountant, we can offer training that directly relates to your work. We have experience of training people from all industries and have particular specialist knowledge of the agricultural/horticultural sectors and of the legal world.

Skills-based language learning

What do we mean by skills-based language learning? Well, rather than learning language like you probably learnt it at school – memorising long lists of vocabulary and irregular verbs, it is much more efficient (and fun) to base your language learning on important skills such as telephoning, negotiating, writing emails, greeting visitors, explaining processes. Skills-based language learning allows you to immediately understand why you are learning particular phrases, grammar and vocabulary – because it is useful to you and your work.

Improving your vocabulary

How can you speak a foreign language if you don’t have any words to use? Vocabulary is vital, whether it is learning the basics so that you can get your message across, through to widening your vocabulary so that you don’t find that you are constantly recycling the same limited set of words, or being able to express yourself with elegance and sophistication like the best native-speakers. Whatever your level, there is always progress to be made. Remember, the better your grasp of vocabulary, the more relaxed you will feel when speaking English.

And don’t forget the grammar!

Although grammar is not our primary focus, it is important to have a good understanding of grammar in order to be precise and accurate in your language use. Difficulties with grammar can impede understanding – “tomorrow, I went to the swimming pool” – whereas a mastery of grammar can allow you to use your language with ease and confidence.
